What Is Low Level Laser Therapy?

Low-level laser therapy is the use of low intensity photonic energy as a treatment modality.  Photonic stimuli excite the body’s cells infusing them with energy, with the three primary reactions being, reduction of inflammation, cell regeneration, and increased blood flow.  Unlike the heat lasers, which are used in surgery to cute problem tissue, the low level laser does not generate heat and destroy tissue; instead it stimulates healing.  

 

Is Low Level Laser Therapy Safe?

Low level laser therapy is extremely safe.  Low level lasers have been proven completely safe in over 3,000 worldwide studies.  There is not one known adverse effect associated with low level laser therapy and there are no code regulated contradictions to treatment.  Additionally, all lasers are developed, designed, and manufactured in accordance to both FDA and International Standards for Medical Device Quality Standards.  

 

What Does Low Level Laser Therapy Feel Like?

During treatment, most patients do not feel a thing, though some have reported a slight tingling sensation or a sense of deep relaxation after treatment.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Number of treatments is dependent on the condition and the application of the laser, although progress is immediately evident.  In fact, just one treatment of laser therapy can generate a significant improvement in pain, impact cell proliferation, protein synthesis, and increase blood flow.  Low level laser therapy addresses the underlining condition and results can last until the tissue is re-aggravated.  Clinical studies demonstrate that the positive outcomes associated with laser therapy are immediate and can last many weeks but like many therapies laser requires numerous treatments to effectively resolve the underlining etiologies responsible for producing pain.  Treating the point of injury can dramatically improve blood and oxygen flow, downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokines, and promote muscle activation and strength, but if the injury is not resolved inevitably these beneficial components will become overwhelmed and the pain will return.  Coupled with preventative care a treatment series with low level laser therapy delivered by a trained professional can generate long-term results.
